Breads and Rolls

Bread is as old as mankind. Bread was the main staple in the human diet for centuries. Today, bread takes on an endless variety of shapes, textures, and flavors. There is quickbread, nut bread, flatbread, artisanal loaves, wraps, and breadsticks. Pizza crust, crackers, and pretzels are part of the bread family.

Yeast bread baking became a nearly dying art until bread machines and stand mixers with dough hooks put the joy back in baking while removing the drudgery. Friends are sharing sourdough bread starter again.

Applesauce, canned pumpkin, rhubarb, and other fruits make wonderful treats that can almost be a dessert. Shredded vegetables like zucchini or carrots can be baked into flavorful, nutritious loaves of bread. Check the baking aisle and you will find ancient grains along with and traditional rye, whole wheat flour.

Today, people with gluten intolerance can enjoy bread again thanks to many alternative types of flour made from rice, coconut, or almonds.
