It Was So Good I Had To Give It Away

When the first ingredient in a recipe is one pound of bacon, you know it gonna be amazing, right? Bacon Crack is even better than I thought it might be, if that's even possible. In my book, the ONLY bacon is Hormel Black Label Bacon.

Why You Will Love Bacon Crack

There is something positively addictive about the combination of sweet and salty things; I have written about that often! Sweet and salty is like a happy dance on your taste buds, making you want more!

Have you ever thought about the magic marriage of sweet and salty? Have you ever wondered why certain things taste so good together? For example, why does a little salt make caramel taste so incredible? Why is bacon so delicious with maple syrup-drenched pancakes? Why is kettle corn so addictive?

I never stopped to think why I love dipping crisp, salty french fries into my chocolate shake, but there it is again, that heavenly duo of salty and sweet!

Culinary experts know how critical it is to strike the perfect balance between sweet and salty. In the world of chef speak, it's called flavor layering. This bacon crack is an ideal example of that magical combination of flavors!

This treat is also very easy to make and only takes four ingredients! It makes a big party-size batch! Let's get cracking!

How To Make Bacon Crack

I always love to do bacon in the oven. I wrote a how-to post about it way back in 2019. I had never tried making bacon pieces in the oven, but it worked great! I covered a sheet pan with foil and cut the bacon into pieces about an inch long with my kitchen scissors.

I separated the pieces, spread them evenly across the foil-covered sheet pan, and baked it at 400 degrees for about 10 minutes, stirring it a time or two. I was in the kitchen bustling around so I could keep an eye on it, and in about 15 minutes, it was all crisp and brown.

I used a slotted pancake turner to move the crispy bits onto a plate covered with paper towels until the cracker base was ready.

While the bacon was cooking, I covered a second sheet pan with foil. The creator of this recipe was much more precise than me, but if you use a 16" by 11" sheet pan, you can fit exactly forty saltine crackers on it, neat and tidy! I did not think it mattered that some were face up and some face down! 😉

Combine the brown sugar and butter in a heavy saucepan and cook it over medium heat until the two are completely combined and the mixture begins to boil.

Once it boils, keep cooking and stirring it constantly for three minutes. It will become the loveliest caramel sauce ever!

Be careful when you do this step because that mixture is screaming hot! Pour the magnificent sauce over the crackers, spread it until the pan is evenly covered, then pop it back in that 400-degree oven for just five minutes.

It will come out looking like this, ready for the bacon bits to be sprinkled on top. I was giddy at this point!

When the bacon is sprinkled onto the hot caramel, most of it will stick in place. Let the crackers cool a little until you can handle them without burning your fingers, and separate them into squares.

Bacon Crack is best eaten on the day you make it, and it is a party-size batch of forty crackers. I think I could have enjoyed eating ten pieces myself, but I would have regretted it!

I gave it to a family with more than just two old people in the household! It must be stored in the refrigerator if you don't eat it all, so here are the best ways to reheat it!

How To Reheat Bacon Crack

Reheating bacon crack will restore the delicious flavor and crispiness; you can do it three ways.

  1. Oven: Preheat your oven to around 350°F. Put the bacon crack on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or foil and reheat it for about 5-10 minutes or until it reaches your desired level of crispness.
  2. Microwave: For a few pieces at a time, put the crackers on a microwave-safe plate lined with paper towels to absorb excess grease. Heat on high for 20-30 seconds at a time, checking after each interval to prevent it from becoming too crispy or burning.
  3. Air Fryer: This is an excellent way to reheat bacon crack. Place the pieces in the air fryer basket and heat at around 350°F for 3-5 minutes or until it's crispy and heated through.

Remember to keep an eye on the bacon crack while reheating to prevent it from burning or becoming overly crispy. The reheating time can vary depending on the thickness of the bacon and your preferred level of crispiness.
