Orange Fluff is a legendary Midwest delight. Just four happy ingredients and quick as a wink to make. If you're lucky enough to be invited to a church or community potluck anywhere in the Midwest, you will probably find orange fluff on the table. It's definitely a crowd-pleaser. But is it a salad, or is it a dessert?
Around here, it is wherever it ends up on the serving line, but just so you know, in Nebraska, Iowa, or Minnesota, it will often show up right beside the cheesy potato casserole and the green beans.

In the Midwest, we do love our sweet salads—Frog Eye Salad, Watergate Salad, Snickers Salad, even Glorified Rice. Kids of all ages love them. And if the idea of a “salad” with whipped topping bothers you, move it right on down to the dessert table.
You might also enjoy this vintage recipe, Old School Cottage Cheese Salad, or my grandkids' favorite, Danish Style Cucumber Salad. Summer's coming! End-of-school potlucks, ball-game suppers, and more will pop up on our calendars like dandelions.
No matter which table Orange Fluff ends up on, if you bring it to a potluck, you'll go home with an empty bowl every time. Orange Fluff is the happy little ending a weeknight dinner needs.
This recipe requires only four easy-to-find ingredients. Cool Whip hadn't been on the scene long in the 1970s, and various "fluffs" became all the rage. This one, among others, was sometimes called "Jello Surprise Salad." The surprise? Cottage Cheese!
You can't even taste the cottage cheese in this recipe, but it does give the mixture substance and a modest amount of protein. There are endless variations on the basic recipe. Some use instant vanilla pudding, some add crushed pineapple, and others include nuts.
If you're looking for something quick, simple, and tasty, this one's for you. But as we said in the 1970s, you can "do your thing!"
This fluff is fast enough to make while the kids set the table. This creamy orange fluff is a cheerful little dessert everybody seems to love.
HINT: Remember to move the Cool Whip from the freezer to the fridge so it defrosts naturally. Ideally, the day before, but give it 4-5 hours for sure. Cool Whip does not like to be rushed; it deflates and loses its famous fluff

Drain all the liquid from a 15-ounce can of mandarin oranges, and, if you like, save a few sections back for a pretty garnish. Remember, I'm a garnish hound!
Put 2 cups of small-curd cottage cheese into a bowl, add the dry gelatin, and stir until everything is well blended. Next, fold in an 8-ounce tub of whipped topping

Fold the drained mandarin oranges in gently and chill for an hour or two. You can eat it immediately, but it will thicken and set up a bit in the refrigerator.
You can add chopped nuts or miniature marshmallows if you like. They add some nice chewiness. I had some fun freeze-dried micro marshmallows stashed in the freezer, and on a whim, I threw some into my orange fluff.
A quick, easy, and tasty four-ingredient salad or dessert, depending on where you put it on the serving line! It's a potluck favorite!

Can I make orange fluff ahead of time?
Yes—this is actually better after a few hours in the fridge. It gives everything time to set up and the flavors to blend.
How long does orange fluff last in the fridge?
About 2–3 days, covered. It’s best the first day or two while it’s still light and fluffy.
Can I use homemade whipped cream instead of Cool Whip?
You can, but it won’t hold as long. Homemade whipped cream tends to soften and separate, so for best texture, stick with whipped topping.
Can I change the fruit?
Absolutely. Mandarin oranges and pineapple are classic, but you can mix and match depending on what you like or have on hand.
Do people really still love this stuff?
They sure do. 🧡 Set out a bowl and see how fast it disappears.
