You can make it on the stove if you prefer, but in my opinion, the microwave is the way to go! You only need four ingredients: butter, peanut butter (I always use and recommend Jif!), vanilla, and powdered sugar.

A Sweet History Lesson On The Origin Of Fudge

It’s believed that fudge originated in America. Legend has it that it first happened in Baltimore, Maryland, on Valentine’s Day in 1886. The story is told of a confectioner and chocolate maker who set about making a batch of French caramels on that momentous day.

However, something went wrong, and he “fudged” them, which in those days meant he thought he had ruined the batch. Surprisingly, the results were delicious! Apparently, that was the first recorded batch of fudge ever, and the rest, as they say, is history.

Over the years, the meaning of words has evolved. During the 1800s, the word “fudge” meant a “cheat” or “hoax.” In those more innocent times, people might utter, “Oh fudge!” when they were tempted to cuss. Those were the days.

No One Knows How Peanut Butter Fudge Came To Be

However, we are certainly happy that it did! The history of peanut butter fudge is a bit of a mystery. It was a latecomer, appearing only in the early 1900s. Today, it’s a popular treat worldwide.

Here in America, we like peanuts. We like peanut butter. And boy, do we like fudge! But when it all comes together, watch out! Peanut butter fudge is a worthy variation of an already tasty treat.

Peanut butter fudge even has its own National Day, November 20, so we have a ready excuse to make it again before the holidays! If you’re curious, you can read more about it here! If you want updates and ideas on celebrating, the confection also has its hashtag, #PeanutButterFudgeDay.

How To Make Fast, Easy Microwave Peanut Butter Fudge

Combine peanut butter, butter, and vanilla in a microwave-safe bowl, then microwave for 90 seconds. Remove the bowl from the microwave and stir vigorously until everything comes together in a creamy, smooth mixture.

I absolutely love using my Pampered Chef Batter Bowl for this recipe. The handle makes it so easy to stir up this tasty fudge!

Now start adding the powdered sugar, about a cup at a time, and stir it well between each addition.

Keep adding powdered sugar and stirring. When all the powdered sugar has been added, and no streaks remain, it’s time to put it in the pan.

Pat That Microwave Peanut Butter Fudge Into The Pan

You can use your fingers to gently pat it into the pan so it’s nice and even. Now, put it in the fridge for at least four hours to firm up. It’s so hard to wait after your kitchen has been filled with that lovely peanut butter and vanilla aroma, but for now, you need to be content to lick the bowl and the spoon. Do it!

When the fudge has had time to firm up and become fudgy, it’s easy to turn the pan face down and plop it on a cutting board. This is rich fudge, so I cut it into sixty-four one-inch cubes with a chef’s knife. It is best to cut straight down rather than drag a knife through the fudge. Nice and tidy!

Peanut butter fudge should be stored in a tightly sealed container in the refrigerator. I put mine in a tin with waxed paper separating the layers. This fudge freezes well; you can eat it right from the freezer! Just pop a bite in your mouth and let it melt! Pure deliciousness!

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make this peanut butter fudge without using the stove?

Yes. This microwave peanut butter fudge recipe requires no boiling or stovetop cooking. Everything is melted and mixed right in the microwave.

Why didn’t my microwave peanut butter fudge set up?

If fudge doesn’t set, it’s usually because the mixture wasn’t heated long enough or the ingredients weren’t measured accurately. Make sure everything is fully melted and smooth before pouring it into the pan.

Do microwave times vary?

Yes. Microwave power levels vary, so it’s best to heat the mixture in short intervals and stir well between each one to avoid overheating.

Can I use natural peanut butter?

It’s best to use regular creamy peanut butter for this recipe. Natural peanut butter can separate, which may prevent the fudge from setting properly.

How should I store peanut butter fudge?

Store the fudge in an airtight container at room temperature for up to one week, or refrigerate it for longer storage.

Can peanut butter fudge be frozen?

Yes. Wrap the fudge tightly and freeze it for up to 2 months. Thaw in the refrigerator before serving for the best texture.

Why does my fudge look oily or separated?

Overheating in the microwave can cause the fats to separate. Heating in short bursts and stirring often helps keep the fudge smooth and creamy.

    1. I've never tried it but if I did, I'd stir them in just before putting the fudge in a pan or I'd sprinkle them on top while the fudge is still soft. My concern is that they will melt in the warm fudge mixture- but that wouldn't be all bad now, would it?
